NGO Association of Estonian Open Youth Centers (AEYC) is coordinating an European Solidarity Corps partnership project “Open Youth Work” offering 17 volunteering placements in different Estonian youth centers.

Paide Avatud Noortekeskus 
Paide Open Youth Center

Paide, 10-12 months

LOCATION:
Paide is located in the heart of Estonia. Being one of the oldest towns in Estonia, it is a lovely town with a rich history to its name, best known for the Paide Tower and Wittenstein Time Center. One will find everything in Paide, from shops and spas to adventure parks and junkyard shelters, making it a convenient place for living. It also has a good connection with other major cities but is still surrounded by beautiful nature.

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION:
Paide Youth Center has one main youth center in the city of Paide and three smaller youth rooms in Roosna-Alliku, Tarbja, and Anna. The volunteer will also have the possibility to be part of the youth work in Türi Youth Center close by. All of the centers are within a 15km radius. Paide Youth Center offers a variety of activities to local youngsters, the main target group being ages 7-20. In addition, some activities involve participants up to the age of 26. Many events are planned, coordinated, and carried out with other organizations in the community.

The main possibilities at the youth centers are skatepark and different competitions, developing digital literacy, recycling workshops, helping youngsters to carry out their own ideas, cooking classes, and work education. The center also has modern sound equipment. Every week the open area’s activities are planned out by the team and the volunteer will be part of making the plans.

The main tasks for the volunteer will be to connect and communicate with the local youth and to offer them an opportunity to improve their foreign language skills and to learn about a different culture. The volunteer will also be part of the activities carried out at the youth center. Since a Waldorf kindergarten is operating in the same building, the volunteer will have an opportunity to work with younger kids aged 1.5-6.

Põltsamaa Noorte- ja elukestva õppe keskus
Põltsamaa Youth and Lifelong Learning Center 

Põltsamaa, 11-12 months

LOCATION:
Põltsamaa is a town in Põltsamaa Parish, Jõgeva County, Estonia. The town is situated on the Põltsamaa river and features a 13th-century castle. Põltsamaa town, located at the crossroads of important Estonian highways, is known for roses, parks, bridges, and wines. The bus connection is available within the Põltsamaa municipality. There is a good connection also with big cities like Tartu and Tallinn.

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION: 
Põltsamaa Youth and Lifelong Learning Center is a youth work institution with the main task to support joint activities of children and young people (7-26 years old) with different interests and their own initiative and to increase the social inclusion of young people.

The center operates on the principle of open youth work and coordinates different activities and events accordingly. They offer opportunities for developing one’s physical, social, emotional, cultural, and cognitive abilities, and to experience achievement, leadership, enjoyment, friendship, and recognition.

The activities are voluntary and open to all. There is free space for all youth meetings. The Youth Centre offers competence, infrastructure, and resources for youth work. The team is also tightly connected with the local community and organizes events to enrich the local community’s leisure time.

The volunteers will be part of the center’s everyday life and will communicate with the youngsters, carry out different games and activities, prepare learning opportunities, and teach about their culture and knowledge. They will also have the chance to pursue their own interest and come up with new activities and events. The hosted volunteers will have access to the diverse opportunities of the youth center that has a variety of living rooms and spaces, a kitchen, different equipment to plan out creative activities, and spend their own free time. In addition, they will be able to use the music room, outdoor gym, skate park, and lots of more different outdoor facilities.

Orissaare Avatud Noortekeskus
Orissaare Open Youth Center

Orissaare, 8-9 months

LOCATION:
Saare County is in western Estonia on the island of Saaremaa. Saaremaa is the largest island in Estonia. Saaremaa Parish is also the largest municipality in Estonia by land area. The administrative center of the municipality is its only town Kuressaare. Orissaare is a small borough in Saaremaa Parish. 

Orissaare is a beautiful and peaceful place to live. Orissaare marina with the Islet of Illiku and a Small Channel (Väike Väin) are offering good conditions for sailing. The Islet of Illiku also belongs to the international bird protection reserve where people have a good opportunity to observe birds and hear their “singing concert”.

Everything you need is right there: gymnasium, kindergarten, library, food store, youth center, hobby schools (musical, sports), culture house, marina and good bus connection with Kuressaare and mainland. 

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION: 
Orissaare Youth center was built and opened in 2013.  Youth center target groups are the young people from the age of 7-26. The youth center is part of the local community. The Center works together with the local gymnasium, hobby schools, library, and culture house. Projects are held with Muhu and Tornimäe Youth Centers.

Young people have the possibility to play billiards, table football, different board games, and console games. There is a music recording studio, the possibility to socialize with peers, make creative projects, etc. All hobby schools, shops, bus stations, and libraries are in the same area (300m radius).

Youth Center is based on the principle of open youth work, which means that the youngsters are offered different opportunities to participate on a voluntary basis in order to support their involvement in society and coping in social life. The ideas should come from the youngsters and based on their needs and interests. It is very important to support young people’s initiative.

Saku Noortekeskus
Saku Youth Centre

Saku, 10-12 months

LOCATION:
Saku is a parish located 12 km from the capital city Tallinn. Perfect place to live, calm and nice, but very close to the capital and its opportunities. We are a fast-growing municipality, that has about 12000 inhabitants.  It has a good connection with the capital city by train and bus. Saku has great living conditions, we have 3 schools, 3 kindergartens, several grocery shops, library, sports center with pool, very good sidewalks roads, also between Saku and Tallinn, that supports sports like cycling and rollerblading. Saku is most known by Saku Brewery which is one of the two biggest breweries in Estonia.

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION: 
Saku Youth Center is administered by Saku Municipality. We have 2 youth centers located in Saku and Kiisa. The distance between the 2 centers is about 9 km. Youth Centers offer different activities to local youngsters, the main target group is between 7-13 years, but can also be up to 18 years.  

The main possibilities at the youth centers are different competitions, workshops, hobby clubs, helping youngsters to carry out their own ideas, open cooking classes, etc. Every week the open area’s activities are planned out by the team and the volunteer will be part of making the plans. Saku Youth Center has an active youth group called „Aktiivikad“, this group includes young people who help the staff to carry out activities and carry out their own ideas, what to offer to the local youngsters. 

During the school breaks and summer, we organize different types of youth camps. For 10-12-year-olds, we have 4-5 nights overnight camp together with the youth from our friendship municipality Ylojärvi from Finland every year. Youth between 13 – 17 participate in work camps where they can get their first payments and work experiences. Youth from 13 – 26 years also participate in different international projects.

We have hosted over 15 volunteers so far. Our first volunteer arrived in 2006. We can share previous volunteer contacts, so you can speak about their experience in our center.

Kohila Avatud Noortekeskus
Kohila Open Youth Center

Kohila, 9-10 months

LOCATION:
Kohila Municipality is on the banks of the Keila river in Rapla County. From the Kohila center it is about 36 km to Tallinn, our country’s capital, and we have a very good transport connection to Tallinn and other places also. In Kohila we have two schools – Kohila Gymnasium (Kohila Gümnaasium in Estonian) which has elementary school in Hageri, and Kohila Manor School (Kohila Mõisakool in Estonian). Kohila also has several kindergartens. In Kohila there are a lot of good opportunities to do different kinds of sports – hiking, disc golf, swimming, bicycling etc. We have a lot of good events also – like Kapa Festival which is a music festival with Estonian bands and singers. In Kohila we have two big shops where you can buy food and everything you need in everyday life. We also have pharmacies, ambulance, construction shops etc. On weekends you can go and spend time in the nature or travel around in Estonia. In summertime you can go swimming in Keila river and when you want you can ride a bike to Alesti swimming place which is about 8 km away from Kohila center. We also have a bog named Rabivere bog with a beautiful Kõnnu lake. We also have local restaurants that serve very good food. In Kohila, we also have a library where you can borrow books in English as well – if you love reading. Kohila is a very safe place and we have very good community between different organisations. 

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION: 
In Kohila we have three open youth centers. Kohila is in the middle of Kohila and Hageri and Prillimäe centers are in the nearby villages. Open youth centers work with young people who are between 7-26 years old but most of the time we have 7-16 years old youngsters who come to youth centers. Our main goal is to offer different kinds of activities and support youngsters while they grow up. We write projects with them, talk about everything, we do a lot of fun events, help them to get jobs and choose schools, we play with them and listen to them, we do charity work with children, we go bicycling, canoe riding, hiking etc.

We also organize different kinds of camps – in summer we definitely have a work camp, where youngsters can do various kinds of jobs and earn some money. We are like fun adults who hide education in different cool activities for youngsters and we are always there for them and do everything according to their needs.  We are open from Monday until Friday, 13:00-19:00. Volunteers in youth centers also are there for youngsters – listen to them, play with them, do different kinds of activities. Every week there should be one activity which is directed by volunteers for youngsters – of course youth workers will help!

Vastseliina Noortekeskus
Vastseliina Youth Center

LOCATION:
Vastseliina is located in the South-East part of Estonia near the Russian and Latvian borders. Vastseliina is probably the best small place to live in Estonia, because we are surrounded by beautiful nature and the place has old history, but still there are most everyday services what people need. There are pretty good public transportation to travel to other places in Estonia. There are over 30 different hobby activities and local people are organizing lots of events to take part in Vastseliina. Vastseliina is located in the middle of several cultures (Võru, Seto), what people can experience through various events. For example, the Seto Kingdom day event.

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION: 
Vastseliina Noortekeskus is a youth center. It is open room for youth to do spare time activities and learn new things through non-formal education. The motto of the youth center is “The place where dreams come true”. There is a lot of space and quite a lot of rooms. There is an office, a skatepark, a playground, a really well equiped kitchen, a gym room, a class room, an xbox room and a big space with a table tennis and a pool table, a big speaker to put on music, an outside table tennis, an outside big chess game, different ballgames, benches made from wooden pallet. The age group of youth who are mostly visiting the youth center is 9–16 years old. Youth workers are creating a variety of opportunities for young people, starting from gathering ideas from them, supporting youth with consultations and projects, etc. The center is open five days a week, Monday to Friday from 12:00 to 19:30 and occasionally on Saturdays or Sundays from 12:00 to 18:00. The youth center is located right next to the school and, due to its location, there are 40 to 60 young people a day visiting the youth center. Most activities are free for young people.

Vastseliina Youth Center is focusing every year on some kind of a topic. Our topic for this school year is environmental protection and money/financial education. We are organizing various events, seminars, vegan cooking schools, overnight events, trips about those topics, etc. We need volunteers who helps to prepare and organize those activities with youth and youth workers. Additionally, the volunteer is doing everyday activities with youth in the youth center. Every month we are organizing adventure activities (canoeing, hiking, karting, bowling, air-soft, paintball, etc). Volunteer can help to prepare those activities and take part of them as well.

Pärnu Noorte Vabaajakeskus
Pärnu Youth Recreation Center

LOCATION:
Pärnu Youth Recreation Center is located in Pärnu city, which is the fourth largest city in Estonia, the summer capital. Situated in the southwest of Estonia, the city is known for its spas, shallow white sandy beach, and beautiful parks. The Pärnu River flows through the city and drains into the Gulf of Riga. It is a great location as everything is basically within walking distance.

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION: 
The organization has two youth centers – Pärnu Youth Recreation Center and Audru Youth Center. Volunteer’s workdays will mainly be at the Pärnu Youth Recreation Center with the opportunity to also help out at the Audru Center. The volunteer will be expected to assist the youth worker to carry out daily activities. In addition, the volunteer will be involved in the decision-making about what type of activities should be carried out in the youth centers each month. The volunteer will always be accompanied by a youth worker in the youth centers.

Pärnu Youth Recreation Center – divided into four parts – stage hall and cafe; a meeting room; gym and gymnasium; band rooms and a studio. While the gym and band rooms are used for specific activities and the meeting room for training, meetings, or more private seatings, the café and stage part are free for all young people to use on a daily basis. The youth center offers a wide range of activities for young people who spend their free time there.

Audru Youth Center – 10km away from Pärnu City center. It is easily accessible by bus or bicycle. Located on the first floor of the Audru Culture Center, where a large and spacious room with a new kitchen awaits the youngsters. Young people can play pool, air hockey, table tennis, table football, various board, and card games. In addition, we offer the opportunity to use the latest game consoles and computers. All of this is accompanied by daily activities.

Aakre Rahvamaja
Aakre Community Center

Aakre, 9 -12 months

LOCATION:
The volunteer’s service takes place in co-operation between three institutions – Aakre Community Centre, Rannu Youth Centre and Elva Youth Centre. All these three places are very different and the distance between these places is about 20-25 km. It is possible to use busses and trains to move between service places. In rural areas busses are free for travellers. In all these places there are school, kindergarten, shop, library, cultural house. In Elva there is also a sports hall, hospital, adventure park etc. Aakre Community Centre is a cultural house in a little village where there are about 300 villagers. Rannu Youth Centre is in Rannu, with about 370 people. Elva Youth Centre is in Elva and Elva is a centre of Elva Municipality. In Elva there are about 5600 residents and in Elva Municipality there are 14 636 residents. The area of Elva Municipality is 732,27km2.

There is a very good bus and train connection between Elva and Tartu, the distance between these towns is 25 km. There is also good connection with Tallinn and other Estonian places.

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION: 
The volunteer will be part of service places’s everyday life and main tasks are related with open youth work activities, the volunteer can also help with hobby classes, youth events and adults free time activities. The volunteer will also have the chance to pursue his/her own interest and come up with new activities and events. There is also an opportunity to do different activities in Rannu School and in Elva Hobby School. In our voluntary service places there is the possibility to play billiards, table football, table tennis, board games, outdoor games, there are musical instruments, kitchen, etc. In our youth centres we have different hobby classes, for example cooking, acting, technology, checkers, etc. In summer we also organize different kinds of camps, despite the season we do outdoor activities (hiking,outdoor games, etc).

Sauga Noortekeskus
Sauga Youth Centre

Sauga, 11-12 months

LOCATION:
Sauga is a small borough with a population of 1144 people. Although Sauga is small, it is right next to the fourth largest city in Estonia – Pärnu. Bus connections are really good between Sauga and Pärnu, and since it is only about 1.5km, biking and walking are also options. Though, everything necessary for everyday life can be found in Sauga.

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION: 
The open youth center of Sauga was established in 2006 in Sauga. The aim of the youth center is to provide the local youth with different free time and non-formal educational activities so that the youngsters can get new skills and knowledge according to their age and interests.

The youth center has many different rooms on 2 floors. There are 3 rooms for young people, where they can spend their time and do different activities. For example, play pool, table football, Xbox, various board games, use computers, etc. Upstairs are the kitchen, the seminar room, the hall, the media room, the band room, and the toilets. The youth center has weekly hobby groups for youth in crafts, cooking, show dance, folk dance, photography, guitar, and the drums. There are also various activities for adults, such as the cooking lessons, the dance club with live musicians, the baby school, and the choir. In addition to everyday activities, the youth center organizes many big events for the whole community.

The volunteer will mainly be communicating and doing different activities with the young people in the youth center’s open space area. Also organizing different events and activities for the young people and local community. The volunteer can help out with the many hobby classes we have, can start doing activities that he/she is interested in, and teach about their own culture. There is also the possibility to spend some of the time in a local school, helping the English teacher with the lessons, also the school’s youth worker with organizing events and activities in the school.
